自由とは赦しの先にある ─ Dan Mitchel、新シングル『Free』をリリース

テーマは「浄化」。80s回帰サウンドと音響実験、空間オーディオ対応で描く全3曲・12分

失恋や自己否定、誰かを赦せないまま夏を終えたあなたへ──“自由”とは何かを問いかける全3曲。
唯一無二のドラマティックアーティスト Dan Mitchel が、最新シングル『Free』を2025年9月3日（水）にデジタルリリースする。

本作は全3曲・総尺約12分で構成され、「浄化」をテーマにしたコンセプチュアルな作品。
配信・プロモーションは FRIENDSHIP.（HIP LAND MUSIC） のサポートを受けて行われ、Apple Musicでは 空間オーディオ（Dolby Atmos） に対応する。
同日には、YouTubeでは「Free」「The Biggest Love」のLyric Video(日英同時表示)、そして「Sunshine（今夜は、ずっとリハーサル？Ver.）」のLIVE映像が公開される。

【シングル『Free』の設計思想】

『Free』の核にあるのは「浄化」というテーマだ。
Danは「人間らしく生きようと思えば思うほど、歳を重ねるにつれて心の傷は増えていく。ときには自分を責め、諦めの中で流されるように生きてしまうこともある。けれど、そうしたものを手放して、そろそろ自由になってもいいんじゃないか──そんな祈りを込めた」と語る。
音響的にもユニークな実験が施されている。
全曲をDbメジャーで統一し、楽曲全体を1.01倍速に調整して基準音をA=444Hzに設定。
その結果、C5が528Hzで響く構造になっている。
528Hzは「ソルフェジオ周波数」のひとつで、“癒やしの周波数”あるいは“愛の周波数”として知られる音域だ。近年の研究では、数分間の聴取によってコルチゾールの減少やオキシトシンの増加、不安感の軽減が観察された報告もある。
ただし、Dan自身はそれをポップスの中で使うことに対する効果については「依然として半信半疑」であり、あくまで実験的導入として採用しているに過ぎない。
通常であればCメジャーを基調に528Hzをトニックに据えるのが自然だが、DanはあえてDbメジャーを選択。528Hzをメジャー7th（M7）として響かせることで、解放感と浮遊感を同時に生み出している。
この仕掛けは全曲に共通するが、特に表題曲「Free」ではメロディのハイポイントでC5が鳴るように設計され、最も象徴的に活かされている。

【各曲解説】

1. 「Free」
   2025年8月に詞先で書き下ろされた新曲であり、シングルを象徴する表題曲。
   「Sunshine」「When I Think Of You…」「Angel Heart」に連なる原点回帰的な80sサウンドを基調に、明るく素直でありながら切なさを含んでいる。
   歌詞では、心の傷や自己嫌悪をそのまま認め、赦し、手放すことで「自由」に至る過程を歌う。
   背景には、Danが感銘を受けた米ベストセラー作家ウェイン・W・ダイアーの思想や神道における「祓い」の考えが垣間見える。ただし宗教的な色彩ではなく、個人の決断としての赦しを重視している。

そこにDanが得意とする情熱的なラブストーリーが絡んでいく構成となっており、
この夏、大きな失恋や喪失を経験した人たちにも、ぜひ聴いてほしい一曲だ。
後半には日本語パートを導入。前半の山下達郎やCharlie Puthを彷彿とさせるような高音のロングトーンやCity Pop的なサウンドに対して、吉田拓郎を思わせるミスマッチな歌唱スタイルが、曲に新たな質感を与えている。

2. 「The Biggest Love(Ver.444)」
   2022年7月に、その日の勢いで制作された短編曲。構成はわずか4コードとシンプルだが、テーマは重厚だ。
   「重大犯罪者のことでさえ、その罪を忘れずに赦すことで、自らが幸福になれるのではないか」という逆説的なメッセージを掲げ、壮大で哲学的なダンディズムを歌い上げている。
   表題曲「Free」が示す“赦しと浄化”のテーマをさらに拡張する位置づけを担っている。
   この曲はアルバム『夏のおわりのラブストーリー』にも収録されているが、本シングルでは改めてカップリングとして選ばれ、新たなバージョンとLyric Videoが制作された。

3. 「Sunshine（今夜は、ずっとリハーサル？Ver.）」
   デビュー曲「Sunshine」を再構築したLIVE音源。
   前２曲が、完全にDanひとりによる制作だったのに対して、ミュージシャン4名との即興セッションで誕生した唯一無二のテイクである。
   収録は2025年3月29日、東京・代々木八幡のスタジオで開催された公開音楽リハーサルイベント「今夜は、ずっとリハーサル？」にて行われた。
   このイベントは、リハーサルそのものを観客に公開するというユニークな形式を取った。
   ダンサーや照明演出を交え、楽譜や歌詞をプロジェクターに投影。20曲を超えるリハーサルと1時間の総括LIVEというプログラムで、アートとエンターテインメント、LIVEとワークショップが融合した一日となった。
   その中で披露された「Sunshine」は、原曲とは異なる熱量と即興性を帯びた特別なテイクに仕上がっている。

音楽、映像、イベント、そして哲学の分野を横断するドラマティックアーティスト。2024年に株式会社ドラマティックフロンティアを設立。
初監督映画『夏のおわりのラブストーリー』はハリウッド映画祭に入選し、Reale Film FestivalでBest Asian Filmを受賞。翌2025年1月にはAiko Yoshibaと同映画のサウンドトラックを共作した。

Freedom Lies Beyond Forgiveness — Dan Mitchel Releases New Single “Free“

[Theme: “Purification.” A three-track, 12-minute conceptual single blending 80s nostalgia, sonic experimentation, and spatial audio.]

For those who ended the summer weighed down by heartbreak, self-denial, or the inability to forgive—Dan Mitchel’s new single Free asks: What does freedom truly mean?

The dramatic artist returns with his latest digital release on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, supported by FRIENDSHIP. (HIP LAND MUSIC).

The single spans three tracks and approximately 12 minutes, unified under the theme of purification. It will be available worldwide across digital platforms, with Dolby Atmos spatial audio on Apple Music. On the same day, YouTube premieres include lyric videos for Free and The Biggest Love (with Japanese–English dual subtitles), and a special live performance of Sunshine (Is Tonight Just A Rehearsal? Ver.).

[The Concept Behind “Free”]

At the core of Free is the theme of purification.

Mitchel explains:

“The more we try to live authentically, the more scars accumulate with age. Sometimes we blame ourselves, or simply drift along in resignation. But perhaps it’s time to let go—to forgive, and finally be free. That’s the prayer I poured into this work.”

Sonically, Free is also an experimental project. Every track is set in Db major and played back at 1.01x speed, shifting the pitch reference to A=444Hz, so that C5 resonates at 528Hz—known as a Solfeggio frequency, often described as the “frequency of love” or “healing.” Some studies suggest brief exposure can reduce cortisol, raise oxytocin, and ease anxiety.

Yet Mitchel emphasizes its use is experimental rather than mystical:

“I’m still skeptical about how such frequencies truly function in pop music. For me, it’s simply an experiment.”

By placing 528Hz not as tonic in C major, but as the major seventh of Db major, Mitchel creates both openness and floating tension. This effect runs through the entire single, with the title track Free highlighting C5 at its melodic peak.

[Track Breakdown]

1. Free

Written in August 2025, Free is the centerpiece of the single. Built on bright yet bittersweet 80s-inspired city pop textures, it continues the lineage of Mitchel’s earlier songs like “Sunshine“, “When I Think Of You…“, and “Angel Heart“.

The lyrics explore the path to freedom through acceptance of wounds, forgiveness, and release—infused with influences from Wayne W. Dyer’s philosophy and the Shinto notion of harae (ritual purification). Yet Mitchel frames it not religiously, but as a personal decision to forgive.

The second half introduces a Japanese verse, contrasting soaring long-tones reminiscent of Tatsuro Yamashita or Charlie Puth with an earthy, almost folk-like vocal style recalling Takuro Yoshida—producing a unique clash of textures.

2. The Biggest Love(Ver.444)

Originally written in July 2022 in a single burst of inspiration, this four-chord track carries a weighty message: Even the gravest offender can be forgiven—and in that act, one may find happiness.

Its paradoxical, philosophical stance embodies Mitchel’s “dandyism.” Serving as an extension of the forgiveness/purification theme of Free, this new version comes with a fresh lyric video.

3. Sunshine (Is Tonight Just A Rehearsal? Ver.)

A reimagined live take of Mitchel’s debut song Sunshine. Unlike the previous two solo productions, this recording was born from an improvised session with four musicians, captured during Mitchel’s public rehearsal event Is Tonight Just A Rehearsal? held on March 29, 2025, in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Hachiman.

The event blurred rehearsal and performance, mixing dance, stage lighting, and projected lyrics for an immersive workshop-style experience. The live Sunshine captures a raw, spontaneous energy distinct from the original.

“In my thirties, I’ve realized how often fear of pain makes us timid. We end up binding ourselves, losing the freedom we once longed for. To be released from that oppression, perhaps what we need is someone’s ‘great love.’

I’ve only just begun my own story of transformation—I’m in no position to speak from a pedestal. But if these songs can sit beside your life, I’ll be glad.

Founded Dramatic Frontier Co., Ltd. in 2024. His directorial debut “A Love Story in The Summer” was screened internationally and won Best Asian Film at the Reale Film Festival. In January 2025, co-composed the film’s soundtrack with Aiko Yoshiba. In April 2024, organized a large-scale birthday live with over 30 artists, blending band, dance, and theater, drawing 150+ attendees.
